Sleeping on silk gives the phrase ‘8 hours of Beauty Sleep’ a whole new meaning. Oh wait, I got another one – “Sleeping beauty” is no longer a just a Disney fairytale. 😛
When I first found out about silk pillow covers, I thought they were just an over indulgence. But in my quest to conquer my curly hair, I gave this a try as well. And I was not one bit disappointed.
Should we buy silk or satin pillow cover?
The first thing is to understand terms like silk, satin, charmeuse etc. Silk is a fabric produced from the silk worm, whereas satin is a fabric weave and not a fabric. Satin silk from polyester is a manmade fabric produced from polymers. Silk is spun from the natural silk protein filament produced by the silk worm. Charmeuse is a lightweight fabric woven with a satin weave.
Both polyester satin silk pillowcases and natural silk pillowcases provide benefits to your skin and hair through reduced friction. But because silk is a natural protein, it provides additional benefits. Silk is a breathable fabric, it is naturally hypoallergenic and is resistant to fungus and is more durable.
Why should we sleep on silk pillow cover?
- It prevents frizz. The fibers in a regular cotton case rough up hair’s cuticle.
- It doesn’t absorb the moisture from your hair since it is less absorbent than cotton.
- It eliminates face creases because it allows gliding motion due to low friction.
My experience:
I use SpaSilk’s pillow cover. You can buy it here (Silky Satin) or here (Pure silk).
- All the products that I apply on my hair aren’t absorbed by the silk pillow case at all.
- I am the kind of person who tosses & turns a lot in between sleep. This hasn’t ever caused my hair to frizz up. It is just marvelous, this product! Applying styling products and expecting them to do wonders will not happen until you support them with the right platform.
Sadly it doesn’t match all my bed sheets. I am planning to get one in all colours soon! Probably one each from every relative or friend who flies home to India 😛

Hey!
Great going with the blog, I’ve recently begun accepting my curls and it’s brilliant seeing Indian bloggers speaking a language I understand (CG!). Just wanted to say that I think you do get Spasilk pillow cases in India on Amazon (http://www.amazon.in/Spasilk-100-Percent-Silky-Beauty-Pillowcase/dp/B00CWB07ZS?tag=googinhydr18418-21&tag=googinkenshoo-21&ascsubtag=543c7226-2af3-4f27-a8b5-6c0c71ad5ed7) Have a look 🙂

I have DIY satin silk pillowcases, made from sari clothes. But since the sari fabric used is thin, I still use cotton pillowcases underneath.
What are your thoughts on this method?

I think that shouldn’t be a problem. Because your hair is directly coming in contact with the silk only

Concern while buying spa silk on amazon: the negative reviews question the authenticity of the fabric. Any comment ? Or I could buy it and if the fabric is not right then I could return it.
