Why is curly hair dry?

  • December 23, 2015

I have struggled with dry hair for as long as I know. It was like an added burden over having unmanageable curls. But once I found the right products, ingredients and techniques, dry hair became a thing of the past. So why is curly hair so dry naturally? Let’s find out!

Have you noticed how hair becomes greasy if left unwashed for 3-4 days? Meanwhile on the straight haired side of the world, woman feel the need to wash hair every 1-2 days. This greasy feeling is because of sebum – an oily secretion produced by the sebaceous glands on our scalp.

In curly hair, with all the twists, bends and turns, the sebum cannot easily flow down from the scalp to the ends. In straight hair, it would be like going down a slide 😀

This is the reason curly hair is very dry especially after a wash and the very reason we need to rely on external emollients to quench the thirst. The external nourishment can be in the form of oils, butters and silicones found in conditioners and leave ins.

In addition to the natural causes of dryness, there could be other reasons that are causing your curly hair to be extremely dry and here’s how you can find them out and correct them:

  • Shampooing every day or using very harsh shampoos – Since the sebum takes time to reach the ends, shampooing everyday can strip your hair off the bare minimum that’s there. How to wash & condition curly hair.
  • Not conditioning or using a poor conditioner – Conditioner is what conditions your hair and provides the first step of moisturization and a good foundation for your styling products. Never skip conditioner and invest in a good one that suits your hair.
  • Not sealing moisture post washing with a product rich in oil or butter – A good wash should be followed by sealing in the water with a good serum or leave in or the water will just evaporate away. How to apply products and scrunch curly hair.
  • Sleeping on a cotton pillowcase – Cotton absorbs way too much moisture. Sleep on silk instead.
  • Chemical or Heat Damage – Using too many chemicals(hair dyes, smoothening and straightening creams) or heat tools(straightening rods, blow driers) can also cause hair to become dry.

Quench the thirst of your curls and make them happy 🙂 Here is a post with my full curly hair care routine – My curly hair routine .

This is very informative post Anjana .. Thanks for sharing 🙂 🙂 I am taking care of my hair .. and I am pretty happy with this 🙂

how often yu cut yua hair!

I cut my hair every 6-12 months.

My hair don’t becomes greasy. Never. Not in a week not in two. It’s very dry.
I wash, conditoner and do a curl cream into it everything except the gel. I don’t like gel. But the next day after washing, its dry and during the dat more and more frizzy.
What can i do?

What are the products that you use? And what’s your curl pattern and coarseness?

My hair is thick, high porosity and low elasicity. Type 2c/3a i think. The 3th 4th day its more wavy. But wet hair will have spiral curls (i don’t know how to call them i englisch…)

I use
Inecto Coconut Contioner for co wash and conditioner.
Sometimes is wash with Inecto Coconut Shampoo.
Yari Naturels Curl Activator Cream
And a little bit almond oil for sealing.

wash day my hair is perfect. But next days is so frizzY.
I have buy Aloe Vera gel. But i don’t know how to use..

Do you refresh your curls Reena?

I did refresh with spray bottle with water and condioner. And i have try water, condioner and oil. Thats both becomes to more frizz. Can it be?
So now i make it wet with water and a little bit condioner en almond oil to seal. It works for the hair lenght but not above my head.
Als my outsides hair is frizzy. But the under layers of hair are almost perfect…

Have you tried the 1st technique in my refresh post? It works great for crown and canopy

I will try that 1 refresh technique. i have already aloe vera. But didn’t know how to use.
But after that sealing with oil? Or is that no need because of the aloe vera.?
And are the product what i use good? Or is it a need to use gel also after the curl cream or maybe instead the cream?

Sorry for many questions.
I like your blog because its the first time i read about my hair (indian hair).
I’m live in the netherlands and the girl blogs is most of time aubout african hair. The product are for fine but kinky or curl hair. And if not. Then ist for straight hair.

No need of oil
I love gels so I would suggest a gel also

Hi anjana, for me the aloe vera does not work. Can it be the weather? I live in the netherlands and now its winter. Almost spring. But still cold and raining.
I will try a gel. I don’t want the sticky feeling and i don’t like the things who stays in the hair after using gel. So what ingredients have i to look for?? I’ve read your gel post. But still i don’t get is.. only that it must have a hold for crunsing out.

Aloe gel doesn’t provide hold..I didn’t get what your doubt is regarding the ingredients to look for in a gel

The aloe vera gel makes my hair more frizzy. So I have buy a gel. En reagulair hairgel. It’s saying it have a strong hold. But i does not make a hard cast around my curls. So i cant cruncht it out.
And thats why i ask you: For what ingredients have i look, that i can buy a hairgel with strong hold and gets hard and doesn’t flaking??
I ve already looked the post about gel. so i know: no alchol.
I hope you understand the question.
