Scrunch with a T shirt to dry curly hair faster

I have already mentioned in my post on how to dry curly hair that towels and rubbing hard are big no nos as they cause frizz and disrupt curl clumping and definition. We also know that styling products are best applied on really wet hair for better moisture retention and product distribution. After applying products, plopping is a great way to decrease your drying time. Another trick to decrease your drying time and dry your hair faster is by scrunching with a T-shirt.

While scrunching with your hand is used to push product into your hair and encourage curl definition, scrunching with a T-shirt is a 2-in-1 action to encourage curl formation while removing excess water at the same time. Here’s how to do it.

1) After washing your hair, apply your products and scrunch hair like you normally do.

2) Grab and old t shirt and place it on your palms. You can also use microfibre gloves like this.

3) With your head flipped down, continue using the scrunching motion to squeeze your hair in sections as much as you like.

4) You can repeat with a fresh T-shirt if the current one has become too wet. This will help remove more water.

5) After you think that the T-shirt is no longer absorbing water, continue to air dry, plop or diffuse πŸ™‚

Good idea. I must try this. My hair takes almost 4-5 hrs to air dry!

Let me know how it goes πŸ™‚

Excellent idea. Thanks for educating the desperate curries out there.

You are most welcome!

I just want to say thank you!!! I have natural curly hair and I hated or I spent hours straightening it, but yuor web site had become my bible!!!!! I love itdio many things I didn’t even think of, you’re the greatest

So glad to hear that Misty!!

Would this also be recommended with a microfiber towel? I tried it with a t-shirt last time and I just had the hardest time haha.

I guess you could, but I’ve heard even microfibre causes a little frizz. Not sure!

I scrunched up my curls with a 40*60cm microfiber towel for the first time today. Loved the results! Seriously one of the fastest ways to dry curls! And so gentle too. I like this so much better than plopping with a cotton tee followed by air drying for a few hours.

Yes ! πŸ™‚

hiiii,

I’m so excited to be writing in. A friends results made me read your blog and just one wash later, without even changing any of my current products, just your Simple how-tos have already started showing my curls. Can’t wait to move to recommended products once the current lot is done with. 2 questions –
1) i used a microfiber towel as well.. Can you help understand the need for a tshirt in particular considering both are cotton..
2) is there any difference between a leave-in & a cream?

So great to hear that Sunaina and great questions!
1) The towel has tiny hook like surfaces that my cause frizz – If you find that the towel doesn’t frizz your hair you can use it.
2) There may or may not be. Sometimes creams may have some curl enhancing or gel like properties as well – depends on the brand and ingredients

Hi. Love your blog. Very well organised and easy to find everything. I’m new here and can’t wait to try out all of these.
Mine is a 3a type of hair.
Just wanted to ask a few things.
1) I usually put oil on my hair before shampooing, is it bad for the hair?
2) Once dry, do you just casually tie your hair and go to sleep?
Because,i usually put mine up in a bun.
3) Is it an absolute no when it comes to combing even the top part of your hair the next day?

Hey Angela!
1) No it isn’t. I discuss more about that here https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/oils-and-curly-hair-benefits-types-and-ways-to-apply/
2) https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/4-ways-to-sleep-with-curly-hair/
3) Depends on how you like it, the reason we ask not to comb dry curly hair is because the results don’t look nice – if you do like it, feel free to do that πŸ™‚

Thank you so much. 😊

Would love to see a video of plopping your hair overnight. Should I diffuse and then plop? Do you wet your hair every night?

Hi Barbara, I plop then diffuse. And no, I don’t wet my hair every night. Only twice a week currently.
