I adore OGX for their wide array of hair products. And also for how great most of their products are. When OGX Quenching Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter hit the market, I immediately wanted to try it. I mean look at the words – quenching (dry curly hair calling), coconut curls (doesn’t that sound great!). Here is a review of OGX Quenching Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter.
Update : 23 Jan, 2018 – I no longer use silicones because I figured they weigh my hair down.
Description by OGX:
This rejuvenating, creamy blend of coconut oil hair butter melts into dry strands to hydrate and tame frizz, for beautiful tumbling waves with bounce and shine. Lather on this versatile hair butter to boost your curls’ hydration. Leave it in for a moisturizing treatment or rinse it out for use as a deep conditioner.
Price: 725 INR for 187g. You can buy it here (India), here (USA) or here (UK).
Ingredient Analysis:
Water (Aqua), Cyclotetrasiloxane, Cyclopentasiloxane – silicones, Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Cetearyl Alcohol – fatty alcohol (smoothen cuticle), Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Behentrimonium Methosulfate – Quaternary ammonium salt (Provides slip), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Sorbitan Oleate, PPG1 Trideceth6, Ceteareth20 – Emulsifiers, Honey, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Beeswax, Polyquaternium37 – film forming polymer (block humidity thereby preventing frizz), Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate – emollient, Propylene Glycol – Humectant, BHT, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, Magnesium Nitrate – preservatives, Fragrance (Parfum).
The ingredient list looks like everything my curls would love 🙂 Silicones, shea butter, coconut oil and other oils 🙂 My hair responds badly to humectants but I didn’t have a problem with this product (probably because it’s towards the end of the list)
CG Friendly: No
Texture: A whipped creamy white butter with tonnes of slips and spreads easily on curly hair
Smell: I usually love OGX products’ smell but this one is a turn off. Coconut is a smell I adore in hair products but this smells like a cough syrup with a little tropical smell mixed into it 😐
Packaging: A short flat tub made of plastic
Performance:
Here’s how I apply conditioners – How to wash & condition curly hair and here is a post with my full curly hair care routine – My curly hair routine .
+ The oils and butter are actually abundant because my hair looks moisturized and defined without looking greasy
+ Controls frizz and fly aways very well
+ Makes curls look shiny and hydrated
– This may be an overload for Type 3a curls and lower. I have noticed that at times it does weigh down my hair a bit (because of the intense oil concentration maybe?) and so they look slightly wavy. I use this as a rinse out conditioner as opposed to a leave in butter. And even then this is just a teeny bit heavy for my hair.
In short:
OGX Quenching Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter is an oil rich hair butter that is perfect for really curly hair. Even though it’s a tad heavy for my 3a curls, I love its intense hydration and curl definition and will definitely buy it again 🙂

Hey Anjana, can you please do a post on how to apply deep conditioning masks/hairs masks 😢

Najma, apply the mask just like you would apply a regular conditioner making sure every strand is saturated. Keep it on for 30 mins – 1 hour and rinse it off with just water.

And, can it be applied on to the scalp or just the hair strands?

Mainly on the strands. But if you find that your crown is too frizzy/dry, you can apply there also. I apply on my crown also 🙂

Hi anjana, I recently bought Garnier Ultra Blends, oil in cream oil replacement cream.
Can it be used as a cream and scrunched into hair and for revitalizing day two or day three curls?

Hi Udita, Yes it can be used as a cream(but it is high in mineral oil and that can make some curl types frizzy)

Hey Anjana! I’ve only just begun to use this product’s sister- OGX argan oil of Morocco creamy hair butter. I’ve used it both as a leave in and a rinse out. The rinse out options works really well for me with pretty fab results. As a leave in this made my hair greasy. As a rinse out, it melts instantly into your hair upon application and gives ones really soft bouncy curls. I’m saying on the basis of my assumption that it’s really similar to it’s coconut sister. Will be buying this again and also the coconut one for sure in the future.

Does it give definition or do i have to use a gel after applying it? I have 3a/3b type natural curls
Anjana

That depends on your hair type and hence you would need to experiment Srishti. Personally for me, I require gel no matter what product I use.
