I first saw Morango Curls’ Instagram page long ago when I was in India and I was always in awe of their work. They were my favourite Instagram Curly Hair Stylist page. Never in my dreams did I think I would get a chance to get my hair cut by them. But it happened!
When I moved to Netherlands last month, I never thought I’d get an appointment with them this fast because they are always booked out. But I did 🙂
The salon is such a happy place for curlies. Nothing but curls. No out of place equipment, no harmful products, and heads of curls everywhere. All the members of staff themselves have curly hair. Everyone was so friendly and cheerful. It was curl heaven.
The process
Time – 2 hours, Price – 70 Euros
- Dry cut – Irina, the bubbly owner examined my hair and asked me what I wanted. I let her decide the length she wanted to cut 🙂 She started snipping away. She told me that my hair was very healthy and Indian hair wigs are very popular in the market. She asked if she could have my hair(her hair is GORGEOUS and I was eyeing that :P). We found out Devacurl Ultra Defining Gel was both of our Holy Grail Gels 🙂 We talked about so many things curly. Such a fun and friendly lady.
- Wash and condition – Since I follow the CG method, they didn’t wash my hair with a strong detergent. The girl used Boucleme Hydrating Curl Cleanser followed by the Boucleme Conditioner.
- Heat – My hair was wrapped in cling film and I was made to sit under the hooded dryer for around 20 mins to deep condition my hair. It was then rinsed off.
- Styling – Irina then detangled & styled my hair in sections using a tangle teezer comb and using raking method. She used Kinky Curly Knot Today and Boucleme Gel (She wanted to try something new that I hadn’t used before. So she passed her staples like Devacurl gel, B’Leave in, Bouncecurl gel etc). And she used a microfibre towel to absorb the excess water. Then a BIG palmful of mousse was scrunched in.
- Diffusing – Then a girl dried my hair using the Dyson dryer + diffuser.
- Final trims – Once fully dried, Irina fluffed my hair, scrunched out the crunch and then cut off any stray pieces that were remaining.
Deva dry cut vs my previous wet cuts
4 weeks into the cut, I don’t find anything different from my regular wet cuts. Because I was at least hoping my haircut shock period would be less. But my hair was in a shock for 2-3 weeks. Irina herself was complimenting my last cut saying there were no holes in it. Maybe because my shrinkage isn’t as much as really curly/coily hair, I can very well do with wet cuts too. But the whole “curls only” experience was really worth it. Haircuts for curly hair

Hi Anjana,
Nice cut! This salon looks good. I need a hair cut soon though I am not finding much time for that. Hopefully I should be able to get it done this week.
Thanks for sharing this lovely post. Have a good day. 🙂

What were your feelings on the Boucleme products? I’ve been eyeing them for a little while now, but I haven’t shelled out the money for them since there are other products on higher on my wishlist AND I already have a cabinet full of products, haha. Some feedback from someone with more similar hair would be great though!
Also- with how much you love the devacurl gels, do you ever get protein overload? I know you do the occassional gelatin treatments as well, but I feel like it’s really easy for me to get a protein reaction with the light and ultra defining gels, could just be I have to be careful about what I condition with beforehand, but has that ever happened to you?

I haven’t used Boucleme enough to give an opinion 🙂
No I don’t get protein overload, it’s all about getting moisture and protein balanced. So yes, the conditioner before the gel would matter. Hope that helps 🙂

Do you have any suggestions if my curls are totally losing shape over the course of the day/frizzing? I have fine-med 2C/3A curls. They look great the morning after a wash but not for long!

What products do you use? What’s your curl type, coarseness and length? How much of each product do you use?

Hi ma’am…Good evening. I had a doubt. I have curly hair too and since I’m in college I don’t get much time to look after them so there are too much of knots they develop over a period of 2-3 days which leads to breakage of hair. Moreover the knots develop when I get up in the morning… Can you tell me how to maintain my hair at nights while sleeping and also preventing of knots

My hair is fine/medium an shoulder-length with mostly 2C waves but some 3A curls. I am experimenting with products, but recently have been using a dime-size of cantu curl activator and 2 quarter-size devacurl ultra hold gel in soaking hair after sulfate/silicone-free shampoo and conditioner (I shampoo like 2x a week and cowash as needed in between, occasionally I clarify). I air dry. I also bought the Camille Rose Curl Maker to try in place of cream & gel.

I wouldn’t use cantu on fine hair. You can check my basic recommendation here https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/beginner-friendly-simple-curly-hair-starter-kit/. Also that much gel is barely enough. Double or triple it.

Thank you! I was unsure how much product to use since my hair is much shorter, but I’ll work on experimenting with the amount of gel. Can any conditioner work as a leave-in?

Yes I’d assume. Also depends on how heavy it is in oils/butters which may weigh down hair

Hi Anjana,
Your hair is beautiful 😍.
I went to morango curls around the same time as you, had the same treatment with the same products but after (more than) a month now it doesn’t look so great as your hair. Even though I follow the recommended steps Irina and her team emailed me. So I wonder how do you keep your curls so nicely? It seems like I’m doing something wrong but I have no clue what it is.
I have hair type 2c/3a low por and like 5 to 10 cm shorter hair than you.
