Readers following me on Instagram would have seen some weeks ago that I had purchased some popular curly hair products from the US. And a lot of you asked me to review the Kinky Curly Curling Custard first. So here it is!
Description by Kinky Curly: Kinky-Curly Curling Custard gives moisture and curl definition, hold and brilliant shiny hair all in one product! Kinky Curly Curling Custard will bring out the natural curl or wave pattern you never knew you had! It is an advanced botanical formula made with all natural ingredients that nourish and strengthen the hair. This high performance product is very concentrated so a little goes a long way.
Price: Around 17$ for 8 oz. Ya it is very expensive in the US. You can imagine how much more expensive it is going to be in India :|. You can buy Kinky Curly Curling Custard here (India) or here (US).
Ingredient Analysis:
Botanical Infusion of Water, Horsetail, Chamomile, Nettle and Marshmallow, Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Agave Nectar Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Pectin(added to fruit jams to give it the texture), Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate – Preservatives and Natural Fragrance.
OMG I absolutely love the ingredients. I haven’t seen any other product with so many botanical ingredients and yet having no other added polymers or additives. I can’t help but compare it to DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel which has some great botanical extracts but has added polymers and that makes it very product-y(more about texture and smell later). Kinky Curly Curling Custard is Paraben, Silicone, Paraffin, Mineral Oil, and Alcohol free.
CG Friendly: Yes
Texture: The texture of Kinky Curly Curling Custard is slimy and almost like flaxseed gel but much more manageable – Once you rub it on your palms it feels velvety smooth and you can easily apply it unlike the forever-slipping-out-of-your-palms flaxseed gel :P. And it has got amazing slip so it is easy to spread on your hair.
Smell: The smell is a mix of vanilla coconut pudding and botanical extracts, hehe.
Packaging: Transparent plastic tub
Here’s how to apply curly hair gel – Curly hair gels : Everything you need to know
+ Forms a good gel cast that protects and holds curls while it is drying
+ Prevents frizz
+ Enhances your natural curls and gives them bounce and definition
+ A small quantity is all you need
+ Imparts hydration and shine
– If you go even slightly overboard with the quantity or if your hair is not damp enough, you see white residues and flakes after the gel has dried. The brand itself says “This high performance product is very concentrated so a little goes a long way”. It takes a few trial and errors to find the correct amount of product for your hairlength and thickness.
– It is slighly sticky(hands feel sticky after applying the product)
In short: This is one of the best curl enhacing gels I’ve used. The other gels provide good hold but none of them enhance my natural curl pattern like the Kinky Curly Curling Custard. The lovely ingredients makes me like it even more.

Fine hair would do better with a lightweight gel like DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel If the products have protein, they will add to the strength of your hair.

It is a stick custard Swati. But once it is dry it is non-sticky. Did you use it on dripping wet hair? Did you scrunch out the crunch after it dried?

Hello 🙂
The product comes from the US so the INCI list can not be complete and it’s the case with this product !
If you look at the ingredients’ list, there is no gelling / thickening agent. And you can not have this texture without a gelling agent…
This means they most probably used a bad and synthetic polymer !!

Hi Claire, pectin is a thickening agent. It’s what makes jams thick (many fruits have pectin)
