Water should be the first ingredient

Polymers in Gels

After water, the ingredient that actually makes a gel, a gel are polymers. Polymers deposit onto the surface of the hair and cause adjacent strands to be attracted to one, thereby creating clumps and providing the much needed “hold”. Once the water starts to dry off, a gel cast is formed which can be removed once hair is fully dry by SOTC – Curly hair gels : Everything you need to know

  • PVP/VA copolymer or just VP/VA copolymer – PVP (Poly N-Vinyl-2-Pyrrolidone) is one of the best film-formers. But it absorbs water readily, thus making it tricky in humid weather. PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate) resists absorption of water but not as great as PVP in film-forming. PVP/VA copolymer or just VP/VA copolymer is a  hybrid of the above 2 – Best of both worlds 🙂
  • VP/DMAPA Acrylates Copolymer
  • Polyacrylate acid
  • Polyacrylate-2 Crosspolymer
  • VP/Dimethylaminoethyl Methaceylate Copolymer (VP/DMAEMA) – this is also known as Polyquaternium-11
  • Polyquaternium (Polyquats) – Cationic Polymers. Provide hold and humidity resistance.
    • Polyquaternium-4
    • Polyquaternium-10
    • Polyquaternium-11
    • Polyquaternium-28
    • Polyquaternium-69
    • Polyquaternium-72
    • Note – Not all Polyquaterniums are film forming. Polyquaternium-7, Polyquaternium-37, Polyquaternium-44, Polyquaternium-47, Polyquaternium-55, Polyquaternium-59, Polyquaternium-87 etc. are used for their conditioning, detangling or heat and sun protectant properties.
  • Polyamide-1 –  It is a really good film-former. Great Hold. Provides body and texture to hair

Film-forming humectants in Gels

These are products that form a film around your hair (thereby slowing moisture loss) + attract moisture. These can also cause a cast which can be removed by SOTC. But these will not provide the “hold” that we like. A lot of these can be found in custards like Kinky Curly Curling Custard.

Thickeners in Gels

Ingredients like Carbomer and Magnesium Aluminum Silicate merely thicken the product and do not have any film forming properties

Flaky Gels

Gels mainly flake when they do not combine well (are incompatible) with a previous product applied to your hair. To prevent this from happening to your hair, mix the products you are going to use in your palms and see if they form a smooth mixture or chunky white clumps. If they form white clumps, they cannot be used together. Some gels also flake is you use large quantities of them. Good examples are Kinky Curly Curling Custard and Cantu Define & Shine Custard.

Thanks for giving me this link. I hasn’t seen this article. But for me it is so good to use. Now i can look by my self for a good gel. 🙂

Yes!

Hi Anjana i have found a good gel. And i’m happy with it.
I put all the product in very wet hair. Also the gel. But when is dry it with coton shirt, most of the gel goes in the shirt, and the hold from gel is less.
How can i dry my hair without losing the gel out of my hair?

Do you scrunch with the t shirt? or do you plop?

My hair is to short for plop i think. In the past i did plop, but now it dont work as good as before.
So I’ve try both. By plopping the gel is out of the hair lenght only. So i try scrunch with the t thirt. And the most of the gel was out of my hair. So i cant cruncht it out.

In that case, scrunch with a t shirt before applying gel. That was most of the water is out, and then you only need a small quantity. This method works for some people, give it a try. If not, don’t scrunch too hard with the t shirt; that will prevent the gel from coming out fully

When I had really short hair. I would put the product on wet hair and would use a portion of the t-shirt to press against the scalp to soak up the water and then wrap it tightly around my head, so that extra water from the hair would get absorbed without disturbing the curl pattern

Thnnx is was very helpfull!!
I question: al the photos of your beautyfull hair, are they only from day1? Or from 2nd and 3th day aswell? is there any difference between day 1 and the next days?
My hair looks at first day great. But after that the crown becomes frizzy. And making wet and use conditioner or gel, my clums becomes smaller.
I ve try spray bottle, and the other things from your post about 2nd and 3th day…

Most are day 1 hair. A few are day 2. It took me a long time to get day 2 right, so hang in there 🙂 You will get it too albeit late.

Ooh thnx. i had to know what i can expect. May you can show photos from hair wash day to next hairwash. So we know don’t have to high expectings..
I’ve look to your first photo diary and there is so many difference between now and then. Its wort all the work 😄

Haha yes! It’s a journey 🙂

Dear you, thank you so much for this blog.
I found out yesterday I still have curls! Did my washing and conditioning as you show in your video with your routing. Applied product and let it air dry before bedtime. Wow! Amazing curls.
Did something wrong though. Slept with my hair loose, but when I wanted to SOTC it didn’t really work. Might be the leave-in conditioner or the wrong gel, or maybe hair was too dry or to wet. (When do you know if it’s dry enough to SOTC? It looks and feels wet because of the gel?). Well the result was dissapointing. A greasy, frizzy look 🙁
I think the gel might not have enough holding ingredients. I live in Europe and wanted to ask you to look at the ingredients in a gel I am considering to try. If you have the time of course 🙂

Does this look like a good gel? (it’s a spray – I would just spray on my palms and scrunch it in)
Aqua
VP/VA Copolymer
Glycerin
Acrylates/C1-2 Succinates/ Hydroxyacrylates Copolymer
PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil
Phenoxyethanol
Lauryl Methyl Gluceth-10 Hydroxypropyldimonium Chloride
Acrylates/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Copolymer
Panthenol
Propylene Glycol
Sodium Hydroxide
Ethylhexylglycerin
Benzoic Acid
Parfum

I know it doesn’t help but I just know when my hair is fully dry. You could also go by hours and approximate how much time it would take for you to dry your hair.
Yes, the ingredients look good for a gel

Thank you for your response 🙂
My hair is very thick and long. I always feel like it takes forever to dry. I washed it around 8 pm last night and went to bed at 10. This morning at 6 am it still felt damp. I think maybe I should have plopped it… I just scrunched with a t-shirt.
How many hours would you say that your hair takes to dry?
Thank you for your gel ingredient response!

Actually, polyquaternium 69 has the strongest hold of many of the PQs and PVPs. Have a read:
https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curl-products/ingredient-proven-to-resist-the-highest-humidity

I use got2b Ultra Glued gel on my extremely coily hair and it is the ONLY gel to provide unbeatable hold for hours. I can even get day 3 hair with it. Its second ingredient is PQ69. PQ69 doesnt have anything near a weak hold.

Hi Tali, Thanks for the link. I got the information from the post named “Polyquat or not” linked under sources at the end of the post. Maybe the hold of the got2b gel is because of the ACRYLATES/STEARETH-20 METHACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER?

Hi, thanks for the informative article. Is PVP/VA copolymer orVP/VA copolymer or PVP harmful? I was a bit worried at the rating of that ingredient on thinkdirty app.

Hi Jaspinder, It’s a very safe ingredient. I don’t know about that app. You can try this website – https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredients/706937-VPVA_COPOLYMER/

Thank you so much for letting me know!!
