It’s not easy to keep hair looking good beyond wash days if you are a person who works out regularly. The reason hair gets so fluffy and frizzy post workout is because of the salts in your sweat which can dry the hair. I do a mix of aerobics, cardio and weight training through the week and especially with my long hair, getting it to look sane is tricky. I work out 5 days a week and this is what I do.
During workout – I put my hair up in a high pony with a tight plastic jaw clip (something like this or this) because buns can spoil curl definition. (I buy my clips from a shop call Goodwill Collections in Kochi. I haven’t seen a shop like it anywhere else!) Also using a rubber band to tie up a ponytail results in my pony sagging and loosening up while running or jumping. You could pineapple, if you have shorter hair.
After workout –
It’s best not to wash hair everyday as it can cause Hygral Fatigue. I tend to approximately follow this schedule –
- Sunday – Wash day with shampoo – My Curly Hair Routine
- Monday – Refresh
- Tuesday – Refresh
- Wednesday – Cowash – Co washing curly hair – What, Why, How
- Thursday – Refresh
- Friday – Refresh
- Saturday – Maybe an overnight oil treatment
- Sunday – Wash day again 🙂
Refreshing routine for hair and scalp
1) Refresh your hair using any of these methods – 4 ways to refresh curly hair
2) Refresh your scalp to free it from sweat and odour –
- Mix a few drops of essential oils you love with water in a spray bottle and spritz it on your scalp. These essential oils especially work great for this because they smell good.
- Or take a cotton ball and put some witch hazel (for e.g. Bliss of Earth Alcohol Free Witch Hazel ) on it and rub it along your scalp in sections. This will absorb excess oil. You can also use the essential oils mentioned above for the same method. Make sure to dilute it with water.

How are you pulling all your hair in that little clip? Mine is much finer hair than yours and cant seem to be able to pull all of mine into a similar clip..most of it falls out !!

Do you know of any hair clips that would work for much thicker hair?

My hair gets quite greasy after workouts so would it be a good idea to put the essential oils? Also we can let these oils stay in our hair?

Yes, some essential oils can normalize scalp sebum. Yes you can

Also, Nykaa has their own essential oils too, could that be a good replacement?

Is it fine to use essential oils on the scalp without a carrier oil? I have dandruff problems, so I don’t know if using essential oils directly would dry my scalp more.

No, it’s very risky to do that unless you are an expert with essential oils. Also dry scalp and dandruff are opposite – dandruff is caused by an oily scalp. https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/flaky-scalp-dandruff-dry-scalp-products-remedies/

So if I put essential oils along with carrier oil each time after a work out, won’t that make my scalp even more oily?

You can mix it with water, or even if you mix it in oil, use only 2 drops of that mix – so it won’t be oily

I’ve been looking for an article on combating post-workout sweaty scalp! My kiddo and I have completely different textures and she’s just starting her CGM journey but has soccer practice 2-3 times a week. Her scalp gets super sweaty and tends to get oily as a result. She has looser waves so I’m wondering if you’d recommend any of those oils in particular specifically to combat the greasiness? Can you combine the witch hazel and the EO? I’m by no means an EO expert so I wanted to be sure also that diluting with water is sufficient for this purpose? No other steps needed? Thanks SO much! Your curls are gorgeous!!!!

Hi! Thank you for this lovely blog!
I just wanted to know if you could use satin scrunchies to hold up the hair? And is there any post on scrunchies in general? Thank you in advance! :)))

Yes you could use scrunchies Nikita, if they don’t ruin your definition.
There’s no post on scrunchies 🙂

Hi Anjana,
Would you recommend to do the whole water rince then styling cream + gel cast every day?
I train pretty much every day and my refresh game is pretty decent, I obviously never managed the peak hair style when I break the cast.
Your blog helped me to love my curls, which for nearly 25 years had been a frizzy, coarse mess. Now I’m a happy-haired man.
Thank you

Hi Marcel, it all boils down to convenience – if you don’t mind doing it everyday, go for it 🙂
