Paid Collaboration with NYNM

I still remember a few years ago, when the Red Rawkyn Clay Hair Mask was all the rage on Instagram. A lot of curly hair influencers were singing praises about it. I didn’t get a chance to try the mask then. And now when I did get to try, I got to try 3 of Rawkyn’s products all at once! The Red Rawkyn Clay Hair Mask, Green Rawkyn Silkening Protein Mask and Gold Rawkyn Scalp Scrub. Rawkyn has created both the masks to work well on wavy, curly, coily and even straight hair types. Let’s take a look at them one by one.

Green Rawkyn Silkening Protein Mask Review

Description by Rawkyn : Green Rawkyn is formulated to provide protein while moisturizing and softening your hair. It is seriously the perfect balance of protein and moisture.

Price :

2341 INR for 236 ml. You can buy it at NYNM. Use code ANJANA for a 15% discount.

Ingredient Analysis:

  1. Water
  2. Stearyl Alcohol – Emollient(softens hair)
  3. Cetearyl Alcohol – Emollient(softens hair)
  4. Dicaprylyl Carbonate – Emollient(softens hair)
  5. Cetrimonium Chloride – Cationic surfactant that smoothens the cuticle and helps in detangling
  6. Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine – Cationic surfactant that smoothens the cuticle and helps in detangling
  7. Camellia Sinensis Powder – Green Tea Powder
  8. Behentrimonium Methosulfate – Cationic surfactant that smoothens the cuticle and helps in detangling

Ingredients after the first 5 to 8 ingredients are in negligible amounts and can be ignored if you are not trying to avoid any ingredient in particular – Read the Ingredients List, Not the Product Claims

As you can see emollients and cationic surfactants make up the bulk of the product. The proteins, Hydrolyzed Adansonia Digitata (Baobab) Seed Protein and Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, come much later so it is not a protein-heavy product. I’d agree to Rawkyn’s claim of this mask being a balance of moisture and protein. It also contains small amounts of oils towards the end.

The green colour of the mask is due to the green tea powder. Almost reminded me of henna.

Green Rawkyn Silkening Protein Mask Checklist :

CG Friendly: Yes
Protein free: No
Texture: Thick and creamy
Fragrance: Oh my god, I could eat this mask. Reminded me of the matcha desserts I had in Kyoto!

Green Rawkyn Silkening Protein Mask Performance :

+ I shampooed my hair and proceeded to apply the mask. It has amazing slip and glides on hair like butter. Detangling was effortless. I left it on for around 25 minutes.

+ After rinsing and drying my hair, I was like wow my curls feel so soft and bouncy. And now, when I sat to write the review, I see this on Rawkyn’s description for this mask – “Do you need a little more protein? We got your back.  Do you want softer hair? We will handle that.” Love it when product claims and user results match! There was also good definition. If you want strength and softening in 1 product, look no further. Green Rawkyn be Rockin’!

Green Rawkyn Silkening Protein Mask was my favourite among the 3 products. So what did I think about the famous Red Rawkyn Clay Hair Mask?

Red Rawkyn Clay Hair Mask Review

Description by Rawkyn : Red Rawkyn is an intensely moisturizing deep conditioning treatment with red clay. The clay, our STAR ingredient, allows the mask to penetrate deeply into the hair follicle which promotes optimal absorption.

Price :

2290 INR for 236 ml. You can buy it at NYNM. Use code ANJANA for a 15% discount.

Ingredient Analysis:

  1. Water
  2. Glycerin – Humectant(absorbs & retains moisture)
  3. Behentrimonium Methosulfate – Cationic surfactant that smoothens the cuticle and helps in detangling
  4. Cetearyl Alcohol – Emollient(softens hair)
  5. Coconut Oil
  6. Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine – Cationic surfactant that smoothens the cuticle and helps in detangling
  7. Kaolin – Clay that can absorb oil from hair and scalp
  8. Vitamin B5 – Humectant(absorbs & retains moisture)

Rawkyn Red Mask has a good concoction of emollients, humectants and cationic surfactants to soften and moisturise the hair.

The clay helps these ingredients work better on hair by absorbing the oil from the hair and scalp, making this mask almost like a 2-in-1 shampoo + conditioner.

It also has Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein in small amounts and some oils & butter.

I could not find what Argilla is, other than the fact that it is Italian for “clay”, so if anyone has any info, do share. Mica is a mineral added for shimmer. Montmorillonite is also a clay.

The red colour of the mask is due to the red kaolin clay.

Red Rawkyn Clay Hair Mask Checklist :

CG Friendly: Yes
Protein free: No
Texture: Thick and creamy
Fragrance: Like bubblegum 🙂

Red Rawkyn Clay Hair Mask Performance :

– I shampooed my hair and proceeded to apply the mask. It has medium slip. I left it on for around 15 minutes.

– After rinsing and drying my hair, I didn’t see intense hydration. It may suit those who need medium conditioning and those who have fine or medium textured hair.

– I also noticed a bit of curl elongation. Clay is known to elongate curls, so it may be because of that. So if you are looking for some curl elongation, this may be a good buy.

Gold Rawkyn Scalp Scrub Review

Description by Rawkyn : Gold Rawkyn is formulated to care for your scalp while helping prevent frizz. The Grape Seed Oil is amazing for moisturizing your scalp and hair without leaving it greasy or feeling weighed down. Gold Rawkyn also contains just the right amount of Apple Cider Vinegar and is great for combating build-up. It also helps to deep-clean hair and restore its natural strength and luster.

Price :

2385 INR for 250ml. You can buy it at NYNM. Use code ANJANA for a 15% discount.

Ingredient Analysis:

  1. Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride – Emollient(softens hair)
  2. Ethylhexyl Palmitate – Emollient(softens hair)
  3. Sodium Chloride(Table Salt) – Thickener
  4. Hybrid Safflower Oil
  5. Glycerin – Humectant(absorbs & retains moisture)
  6. Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil
  7. Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Aromatic Extract
  8. Water

Pyrus Malus Fruit Aromatic Extract may contain malic acid a type of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) which is a mild chemical exfoliant and helps with scalp exfoliation. I say “may” because I am confused by the word “aromatic” in there as if intended for fragrance.

The Apple Cider Vinegar comes towards the end, so it is present in very small quantity.

It also has sugar crystals which help with physical exfoliation.

Also present in small quantities is Lactococcus Ferment Lysate which is a postbiotic product that may help with cellular skin renewal by removing the layer of dead skin cells.

Usually scrubs just have abrasives like walnut shell. This scrub does have good exfoliants to remove buildup, but they are much behind the oils and emollients. It looks like it is designed more for dry flakes or dry scalp than for flakes caused by overproduction of oil, like in the case of dandruff. It may help with mild buildup and may benefit those who need mild exfoliation on a weekly basis like those hitting the gym daily.

Gold Rawkyn Scalp Scrub Rawkyn Checklist :

CG Friendly: Yes
Protein free: Yes
Texture: Thick, a bit sticky and gritty
Fragrance: Smells like cinnamon roll!

Gold Rawkyn Scalp Scrub Performance :

– My scalp had some real bad flakes due to not being able to wash my hair on time, owing to travel. I applied the scrub on my dry scalp by making partitions and rubbed the scrub in to lift off the flakes and left it on for 10 minutes before rinsing it off. I didn’t find any difference compared to what I would have seen using my regular shampoo to clean my scalp. On trying it the next wash day, the results were slightly better. I am guessing it’s because the oils and emollients are higher than the ingredients that can help with exfoliation.
