When I first started on my curly hair journey, I remember looking for products rich in oils and butters because I thought they “moisturized” dry curly hair – they really did make my hair look good but it was not moisturizing that they were doing.
Water is what moisturizes or hydrates hair. Period. Even the good old dictionary will tell you that moisture=water. Oils and butters don’t moisturize your hair. Then why are they important?
Wetting hair causes it to expand and become plump. Squish to Condish is a great way to optimally hydrate curly hair. During the drying time, this water evaporates. Oils and butters help lock or seal moisture within the hair, helping it remain hydrated longer.
But your hair needs to be really wet and not just damp. Without water before the oil, your hair is lubricated and shiny and probably greasy, not moisturized. It is like applying lotion on dry skin – you just end up with greasy skin. But if you apply lotion on skin right after a shower, your skin looks moisturized.
This is why it is very very important to make sure your hair is very wet before applying products post wash.
In short, you cannot moisturize with just water (it will evaporate) or just with oil (it will keep your hair dry).
This is applicable to the type of products you apply as well. Water based products should be followed by oil based products.
Of course using oil before your wash is for a totally different purpose and it’s explained here – Oils and curly hair – Benefits, types and ways to apply. Also penetrative oils are slightly different, especially coconut oil. It helps retain moisture from within. Science of Coconut oil on hair

I love your hair and I love your blog! 🙂 <3
Very interesting tips. I want to buy conditioner by OGX but it should be without proteins, do you use something like that? :))))

Hi Anjana
I am new to cgm. Oiled my hair last night with figaro olive oil and detangled too with fingers. I lost too much hair, around 200 or more. Is detangling while oiling a wrong method? I lose around 200 when I wash hair too. What am I doing wrong? How do I reduce my hair fall issue?

Hi Anjana…
I have thin curly hair like 2a-2b.
Would like to know which oils are best for pre wash and post wash?
I usually apply oil and leave it overnight before wash..

Oils can weigh down your loose waves so it’s best to avoid them post wash. Pre wash you can use any oil

Thanks Anjana.. But isn’t it required to apply oil to roots? My roots become dry after wash causing hairfall..

I had a doubt. I’ve been told by a bunch of good hairdressers not to oil as it dries the hair even more. Any thoughts? I’ve read related posts on your blog.

2 things Srilata – It’s more about the quantity. Using a lot of oil regularly may potentially do that. But the oils in products or a few drops for scalp massages won’t cause any issue. Having said that, I know many curlies with beautiful hair who oil regularly. So it all depends on how your hair responds 🙂

No, most can be used on straight hair for frizz control. But it won’t become curly

Hi anjana,
I have been following your hair routine for 2 months now.
I use fab india’s shampoo, enliven conditioner and cantu curl activator cream as part of my routine so far.
for some reason i find my hair extremely dry and rough at the end of my wash day (i have tried used more leave in and curl cream but it still no significant difference )
i try to seal the moisture with a tiny bit of coconut oil or serum but it hardly ever helps.
also my hair seems to be really damaged… and my hair breaks when it oil it before wash da y:(
can you please help me with this ?

Hello! I just came across your blog and I love how simplified it is. It so refreshing to finally find the type of content I have been looking for years.
I have a 3a hair and frizz and most often I get overwhelmed by the products and routines of most blogs I check out of.
Bless you for sharing these tips. They are easy to replicate with the stuff available from where I am at!
