ashba curling custard review

I absolutely love trying out new gels and especially from Indian brands, because I think they are the hardest product category to nail as brands as well as to find as consumers. Let’s check out Ashba Curling Custard Review.

Description by Ashba:

Ashba Curling Custard is a natural styling gel infused with flaxseed and chia seeds extract, avocado, and argan oil to provide moisture, shine, and long-lasting curls.

Price:

Around 1000 INR for 200g. You can buy it here (India).

Ingredient Analysis:

  1. Water
  2. Flaxseed Extract
  3. Chia seed Extract
  4. Sorbitol – Humectant, absorbs moisture
  5. Glycerin – Humectant, absorbs moisture
  6. Sodium Polyitaconate – Film forming polymer with good curl retention and environmental protection(derived through carbohydrate fermentation)
  7. Xanthan Gum – Thickener
  8. Xylitylglucoside – Humectant

Ingredients after the first 5 to 8 ingredients are in negligible amounts and can be ignored if you are not trying to avoid any ingredient in particular – Read the Ingredients List, Not the Product Claims.

The main ingredients in Ashba Curling Custard are flaxseed gel and chia seed gel. We already know how a homemade flaxseed gel is loved by curlies around the world.

Why does flaxseed and chia seed turn slimy when mixed with water? Why is flaxseed gel so good for curly hair?

The slimy texture of these seeds when mixed with water is due to the presence of mucilage, a plant derived hydrocolloid polymer consisting of polysaccharides and glycoproteins which absorb water and swell, forming a gel. Mucilage is an excellent film forming and gel forming constituent. It also has barrier forming properties thus protecting from external elements and preventing moisture loss. In addition, mucilage can act as an adhesive.

So overall, it has only plant derived non-synthetic polymers, staying true to their claim! Ashba Curling Custard also contains argan oil, avocado oil and jojoba oil in small quantities.

Ashba Curling Custard Checklist:

  • CG Friendly: Yes
  • Protein Free: Yes
  • Humectant free: No
  • Texture: Thick and gloopy just like homemade flaxseed gel
  • Fragrance: Fragrance free! I love fragrance free products 🙂

Left – Right amount of custard
Right – More custard resulting in elongated curls

Performance:

Here’s how to apply curly hair gel – Curly hair gels: Everything you need to know

+ Provides extreme hold
+ Forms a very strong cast
+ Clumps curls well (5 ways I Get My Curls to Form Fat Chunky Clumps)
+ Controls frizz and fly-aways
+ Great for travel and outdoor events as hair won’t budge
– The 1st pro mentioned above is also a con about this product :). The hold is so much so that even if you go slightly overboard, your hair is stuck like glue and the cast doesn’t budge despite aggressive cast breaking methods like slapping or using oils.
– Tends to make the hair straighter if the quantity used is not correct.
Due to the above 2 cons, there is a learning curve when using this product.

In short:

I would like to nickname this product – MEGA HOLD GEL. Ashba Curling Custard is a good gel if you are looking for a heavyduty gel that gives extreme hold and cast.

Have you used Ashba Curling Custard ? If so, what is your experience with it?

Blog Comments

Hey Anjana! Welcome back. God I missed your reviews! You were the OG blogger when I started my CGM journey.

I have used Ashba custard and my experience was the same as yours – hold is extreme, cast is hard to break. When I use even a smidge more, my hair looks oily, waves are flat and elongated and cast is hard to break. That’s why I am not fond of it but those who love hard hold gels will love it (I don’t like hard hold gels).

Anjana I’m curious – Have your holy grails remained the same now that there are so many more Indian brands and products? Or do you still using Arata original hair cream and flaxseed gel as your go-to stylers?

So glad to hear that Nemisha 🙂

Those 2 are still my favorite 🙈

Hi Anjana,
