  • 8 Reasons You Are Not Getting a Gel Cast

A good gel cast is a desirable property to protect curls from frizz forming external factors like humidity, wind, heat etc, as it dries. Cast does not determine the hold of a gel, so if your results are good even without a cast, there’s no reason to be bothered. Check this post to know everything about gels, including how to break a gel cast – Curly hair gels : Everything you need to know

Here are 8 reasons why you may not be getting a gel cast –

1. Your gel doesn’t have enough film forming ingredients. Film forming ingredients like polymers and humectants do just that – form a film/cast around hair. Check this to know more about such ingredients – Ingredients to Look for in a Hair Gel

2. You have applied a really oily product underneath the gel. Gels cling best on clean hair.

3. You have applied too much of a product underneath the gel. Gels cling best on clean hair.

4. Your hair moves a lot as it is drying. For e.g it rubs on your sofa, or pillow. Or you step out into a windy day with wet hair. Cast can form only if the hair remain undisturbed. Diffusing instead of air drying helps. But if you don’t have the time to diffuse till it is fully dry, the easiest way is to diffuse until a cast is formed and then air dry the rest of the way.

5. Your hair has buildup or is over conditioned. Gels cling best on clean hair(the same principle as point 2 and 3). Clarify using a good clarifying shampoo.

6. You are not using enough gel. Kind of self explanatory I guess 🙂

7. You plop for too long. Plopping for too long can absorb some of the gel too, in addition to the water. Plopping for about 20 minutes works best for me.

8. Your hair is dripping wet while applying gel. I put this point as the last one because styling on dripping wet hair gives the best frizz control. So I would take this into consideration only if you have become adept at styling your hair and know how to experiment with it. Just squeeze out a bit of the water before applying the gel.

I get good cast but after SOTC the curls break and they are all frizzy

Is your hair 100% dry when you SOTC? How do you SOTC?

I’m really confused. I started the curly girl method 2 months ago. I bought a curl cream and a gel recommended for the curly girl method. I have been using natural or organic shampoos and conditioners for years so sulfates were in my things to begin with. My hair cast perfect until 2 weeks ago. Now it’s just soft It won’t cast. What’s going on? I’m using the same shampoo and conditioner and products. I’m also plopping and leaving my hair up for less than 30 minutes. I just don’t understand what changed? Can you help explain this.

Could any of the points mentioned in this post apply to you Michelle?

That’s what’s confusing no. My products and method worked wonderfully until 2 weeks ago. When this first became a problem I tried using just gel but that didn’t work I tried using less product but that didn’t work I tried using the same amount of product I had before but that didn’t work. I wash my hair yesterday afternoon put the curl cream the gel in my hair plopped and then clipped back at the root where I wanted more volume. By midnight my curls at all fallen limp and none had casted. I was working from home so I sat in the chair most the time except when doing some chores. but nothing that included a lot of head movement.

When was the last time you clarified your hair?

So glad you asked. I did more research last night. to my knowledge I had not clarified my hair. In researching the ingredients to look for in shampoo I actually found it in one of my shampoos that I often use. I used home DIY solutions. I added baking soda to my shampoo. I added lemon juice to three cups of water for a rinse. I deep conditioned with one mashed up banana with a tablespoon of honey. That was several hours ago. I’m now waiting to see how it turns out but it looks pretty good so far. I am going to have to finish drying it with a diffuser as I’m going out to dinner for my birthday.

Yes, 100% dry. I use a pump of oil / serum on my hands and scrunch them.

Then it sounds like the products/quantity/hair routine may have issues

I Started using the curly hair gel which contain flaxseed extract for my hair nd I followed the methods correctly. It leaves my hair look greesy nd hard
.It looks wet and I don’t know what to do the very next day my hair looks fine with bouncy curls. Hope you clear my doubts .
Thank you

Which gel is that? And do you scrunch out the crunch the next day – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/curly-hair-gels-everything-you-need-to-know/

Hi Anajana,

Is it safe to apply only gel and skip leave in? I live in Singapore where the weather is very humid (dew point 75 )

Hi Anjana. Have always found your blog very helpful and have got loads of compliments in last one year after following the methods. Came across Ashba botanics ( Indian company) products for curly hair on amazon. Can u please recommend them as they seem to be much cheaper than devacurl ones. Would be a great help.
Thanks.

Hi Madhu, I haven’t tried them personally but have heard great reviews from readers 🙂

Hello mam,
I really need your help for my curly hair
Iam having 3a type curl but now iam loosing my curls n it’s becoming wavy or straight something like that
I don’t know what to do ,
Iam a college student n i can’t afford expensive product
So help me it’s my humble request

I had the same thing happening and I tried a clarifying shampoo. Instead of buying a special shampoo add 2 tablespoons baking soda to your normal amount of shampoo. Make a rinse by squeezing one lemons juice to three cups of water. Follow with a deep conditioning treatment by mashing up one banana with a tablespoon of honey. Leave that on up to 30 minutes. Make sure you put a shower cap over your hair. Rinse very well and wash with regular shampoo and conditioner.

Hi Anjana,

After following Curly hair care routine, can I dry my hair in the sun?

I usually dry my hair in the sun because I feel it’ll some silky after drying it in the sun. Now that I’m planning to start your curly hair routine procedure I got this doubt.

It would be great if you can help me clarify this.

Thanks in advance.

Yes sure, Niharika

Hi Anjana,

This query is regarding combining the hair after washing it. After drying it properly when can we comb hair? Can we comb the hair on the same day of washing it or next day or what is the exact procedure that we have to follow with regards to combing hair?
Usually curly hair is very difficult to comb because of knots.

Please help me clarify this.

Thanks in advance.

can you use any kind of gel for gel casting or do you have to use a special kind? my hair is 2C and im just learning about all this

My hair takes forever to dry and even longer with lots of product in it. Any tips?

Will this work for permed hair?

I don’t know, but I would assume so

Hi Anjana,
I am using the bounce curl gels and shea moisture conditioner for my curly hair. The hair texture and everything seem to be okay only the wash day. by next day I loose the curls and it becomes frizzy. Are there any products that I can apply next day without doing a wash? I do sleep on silk case pillow to protect my curls
