  • 7 Ways to Make Your Crown Area Frizz Free + Tackle Baby Hair

Many a times, your curls look perfect from your ear down but the crown area looks unruly with baby hair strands sticking out. The baby hair strands can either be broken hair or new ones sprouting.

Here are some tips to control crown frizz :

1) Condition and detangle your crown area also – Bottles ask to avoid scalp because they are targeted at straight haired people whose hair can get weighed down making their scalp look flat. How to wash & condition curly hair(similarly if you are a curlie whose crown is flat, you may want to avoid applying conditioner on scalp).

2) Leave some conditioner in the scalp area – Do this only if this isn’t making your crown look flat

3) Graze leave in and gel over your crown – After applying products, graze/smooth some leave in and gel on your crown. I love doing this on day 2 or 3 also, especially when putting it up in a bun. I love Devacurl gel for this since it doesn’t form a strong cast. You can also use aloe vera gel or other gels.

4) No rubbing with towel. I have already mentioned this in the routine – How to dry curly hair

5) Prevent hair breakage – Detangle gently and avoiding pulling on hair. This will prevent baby hair strands caused due to breakage – 2 ways to detangle curly hair – dry and wet detangling

6) Sleep on a silk pillow –  Why sleeping on silk is good for curly hair

7) Protect hair from sun – Sun can cause frizz and damage especially since the crown is the part that’s directly hit by the sun. Make sure you use a scarf, hat or umbrella when you are out in the sun.

Hope that helps!

Is it okay to use cotton scarf to protect curls ?

Better to use satin or silk

Hey Anjana.
First of all, I’d like to say thank you so much for creating your website and imparting knowledge on CGM. Kudos! 🙂
What I’d like to know is that my crown area is not as curly as the rest of my hair, ear-down. So how to get it curly?

Thanks Anjana 🙂

Hii anjana ,
I am transitioning back to curly hair after 4 years of straightening it , it’s been 7 months but I am already frustrated as I can’t do anything but put it in a bun
Any transitioning styles that might help ?

You could add some head bands and scarves. Something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaIp3-AuZTg
add more hair accessories. You can also try plaits and braids to hide the damaged texture

Hi Anjana,

I have been trying to get back my natural curls after years of abusing it with heat and even the occasional straightening treatment. I have now chopped off all the straightened hair and am following the routine you have suggested for most part, but I still have some trouble. The front (face framing) portion of my hair doesn’t always clump. It mostly stays as a semi- straight frizzy mess same as the very back of my head. I do have decent clumps of curls throughout my head but these frizzy bits in between make it look untidy and unkempt. Any suggestions on what I could be doing wrong and how I could possibly fix it?

Would love to hear from you. Your blog and Instagram are my constant references in my new curly hair journey

Do you have heat damage in that area?

I would assume no… coz this is all the new growth after the hair cut.

Then try finger coiling the front part till you get a better hang of it 🙂

Hello. I just started my CG journey yesterday. I used L’oreal smooth intense as the conditioner and leave in and set wet gel to style. But I go to a college where I have to put my hair up in a bun daily so had to do that today so obviously curls got disturbed. But my question is that do I need to use a leave in and gel every time I wash if I’m not going to be leaving it open. Plus any tips on increasing hair volume. I have outrageous hairfall plus dandruff so basically very less volume. So is using an anti dandruff shampoo everytime I wash okay?

Hii I just started CG method. I hv a bit of straight hair at tips since I hv chemically straighten my hair. I usually don’t like to open my hair while I go to work or outside. I usually do a ponytail or braid it. So can u suggest any hair style that I can use other than leave the hair open? My front hair is super frizzy so can i pin it with bobby clips, otherwise it look like a mess. Hoping for ur reply

Hey I absolutely love ur blog because it gives so much details on how to get ur curly hair routine right with primary focus on Indian hair types! Although I could really use help coz I have very fine hair which gets weighed down easily! What would be the best leave in conditioner in such a case?! I read the post on the conditioners listed but none of them give a review on how they react on fine hair. Also would like to know that do we need to use gel every time after a wash or only the times when u need to step out?

For fine hair, try https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/as-i-am-leave-conditioner-review/
Also try skipping a leave in, and using just gel. That works best for hair types that can get weighed down.

Hi Anjana
I’m doing cgm as per ur guidance and it really worked …. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️thanku for clearing all my doubts and now I came wid a doubt and help me with this tooo…
can u help me out with hair breakage … 1)how to avoid and
2)care about the present hair breakage ?
3) due to hair breakage the volume at the top and the bottom difference what can I do to solve it ?
Please help me ☹️

Hi Madhi, You have to be careful while detangling to prevent breakage. As for the existing breakage, you have to wait till they grow out – there’s no other way 🙂

I stay in super humid mumbai. My hair looks great after following the curly girl method, but soon enough grabs moisture from the air and there’s frizzzz. I have fine curly hair and not blessed with lot of volume in the crown area. Is there a hair spray I can use to maintain the look that I achieve when my hair just dries and forms frizz free curls?? Or are harmless hair setting sprays a myth??

I m a beginner..
Can we achieve good curls if i wish to keep my hair care products limited?
thats
hair oil shampoo and conditioner?

do not wish to increase and complicate things and also dont want the financial burden
