Sulphate shampoos can be really drying to curly hair since curly hair is extremely dry. Co washing is great for washing regularly, but once in a while we need a good clarifying to remove buildup and give bounce to curls. Instead of going for hard-to-find sulphate free shampoos, here are 4 ways to turn your current shampoo into a really mild yet effective cleanser.
1) Dilute shampoo with water
In my post on how to wash curly hair I had mentioned that I always dilute my shampoo in a mug with water before applying it directly. Turns out there is a scientific explanation to it! Check this out – How to tame strong shampoo
2) Mix shampoo with oil
Just like prepooing with oil reduces the harshness of a shampoo wash, mixing some (about 1 spoon) oil into your shampoo will make sure it doesn’t lather much and strip your hair off its moisture. Any oil works good – I like coconut and olive oil.
3) Mix shampoo with aloe vera gel, flax seed gel, glycerin or honey
Aloe vera gel (store bought or fresh off the plant), homemade flax seed gel, glycerin or honey can be mixed in, to make your shampoo more nourishing and less harsh simultaneously. A good measurement would be twice the amount of the ingredient as the amount of shampoo.
4) Mix shampoo with a cheap conditioner
Mixing equal parts of a cheap conditioner into your shampoo will also make it milder. But it is important to note that this does not mean that you can skip the conditioning step after this. The purpose of the conditioner in this way is to merely make your shampoo mild and not to condition your hair. So you have to follow this with your regular conditioning. I don’t advocate this step too much though for the following reasons – Buffering Shampoo with Conditioner – Bad or Good Idea?
These 4 options are great considering the fact that I have noticed that these modified sulphate shampoos are actually milder and less drying than some sulphate free shampoos that I’ve tried *gasp*. Plus, they are easy on the pocket.

My lopo hair doesn’t like any oil. Sometimes when I shampoo after an overnight oiling even two washes are not enough and oil is left on my hair behind my neck. Won’t mixing oil to shampoo make hair oily? I am keen on trying this. I already dilute shampoo before application.

No it will just make it mild. Oil will not stick on your hair because there are surfactants with it. Start with less oil and see how your hair responds.

Hi Anjana.
I would ask you a question.
I’m having some troubles with my hair recently; the fact is, I’ve been straightening it for 4 years and that’s about 10 months that I try to apply your advices but, because they had a lot of heat damage, that’s not that for the moment. I’ve noticed that, even though I do the “squich to condish” method, use some styling products, etc… My hair remain to be extremely dry.
I wanted to try to dilute my shampoo (maybe my is too harsh) or mix it with some aloe vera gel, but do I have to dilute it and mixing it after with the gel or are these 2 extremely different methods and I should use one at the time ?
Thanks a lot. n_n

You don’t know how happy I am to find your blog! For almost ten years I’ve been fighting with the Curly Girl Method, doing everything by-the-book and still coming out with limp, flat, grimy-looking hair that never did what I wanted. Finally, after a lot of research, I bit the bullet and used plain ol’ sulfate shampoo again – and suddenly, I had the hair I’ve been dreaming of! I realize now that my hair, though curly, is much too fine for co-washing. I’m finally feeling the liberation I expected from CGM years ago! Thank you, thank you so much for your blog and all your amazing tips!!

Hi anjana….
I have tried this method of diluting flaxseed gel ,water with high poo shampoo .
Honestly the result were amazing , my hairfall has reduced unbelievably but I am facing white flakes which is not dandruff…
What could be the reason and how can I get rid of it ?
Thank you 😊
