Have some free time at hand? Want to whip up some curl recipes in your kitchen? Read on πŸ™‚

Here are some great ingredients that you can mix and match to create your own hair mask for curly hair:

1) Avocado / butter fruit – They top the ingredient list because their creamy buttery texture and fat content make them great deep conditioners that soften, moisturize and impart shine to hair.

2) Milk/cream/yoghurt – They are a great source of fats. They are great for providing shine.

3) Coconut and olive oil – I have explained everything about these oils here – Oils and curly hair – Benefits, types and ways to apply

4) Glycerin and honey – They are humectants. I.e. they attract moisture. They can be a little tricky in humid regions, so use them with care.

5) Apple cider vinegar – Our cuticles need an acidic pH to be able to lie down flat and not frizz and ACV is the best ingredient to do that. It also helps remove any buildup of products, especially for those of you who have totally ditched shampoos.

6) Bananas – They are great for tighter curls and kinky coils as they help in slightly loosening up the curls and making them more manageable. And for that very reason I don’t use bananas on my hair as I don’t like my curls loosening up.

Eggs are great too but I just cannot get myself to put them in my hair 😐 . Eggs, yoghurt/curd, mayonnaise etc. are great for masks but keep in mind that they are not protein treatments – How Protein Helps Your Curls + Protein sensitivity

Here are some great ways in which you can combine the above ingredients to create homemade hair masks for curly hair:

1) Moisture mask – 1 Avocado + 2 tsp olive oil + 1 tsp honey

2) Shine mask – Β½ cup thick yoghurt + 2 tsp coconut oil

3) General purpose mask – 1 avocado + 1 tsp coconut oil + 1 tsp honey + 1 tsp ACV

Blend the ingredients into a smooth paste and apply evenly to your hair in sections. Put your hair up and cover with a shower cap if need be. Let the ingredients work for at least 30 minutes. Rinse and co wash if necessary, but do not shampoo.

These are just regular hair masks and not all of them really “deep condition” your hair. Check this out to know everything about deep conditioning – Deep Conditioning Curly Hair

Bring out the chemist in you and try various combinations and measures of these ingredients to find out what works best for your hair πŸ™‚

If you feel that your hair needs strength more than conditioning, try the gelatin mask.

May be you can give egg white a shot. Unlike the egg yolk, it doesn’t stink

Swati, it is the thought of putting an egg on my hair that is putting me off – not really the smell per se 😐

Awesome post Anjana !! πŸ™‚

Thanks Sheetal πŸ™‚

Wow I wasn’t aware that banana can loosen curls. Would definitely love to try the avocado mask! But I always end up making guacamole dip instead 😁. Wonderful post!

Hahaha, yesterday I was looking around for avocado thinking I’ll do a deep cond. And minutes later I was like “Or maybe I’ll just make a taco” πŸ˜€

I tried the moisture mask with avocado, didn’t work for me πŸ₯Ί
The moment I put it in my hair I had an immediate reaction of flash dry. My hair started to feel dry and frizzy. Against better judgement I left it in for 30 min and when I started to rinse out the make it felt like I had an bunch of straw on my head instead of hair. Like the it feels after bleaching your hair.
I guess it was the olive oil my hair reacted to, because I’ve had this with an gel that contains olive oil.
An absolute no go for me!!

Thanks a lot for this post, Anjana. I’ve been using honey and olive oil as a mask. I should really try an Avocado mask now, but I think I might end up making something with it πŸ˜‰ Can you suggest a mask with glycerin? I’ve bought a bottle and am still to use it :p

Vidya, you can replace honey with glycerin in the masks that I’ve mentioned πŸ˜€

I really would love to loosen my curls. Just bananas would do the trick, is it?

Bananas are known to soften and elongate curls. You won’t see major differences but worth a try. P.S – The change lasts till your next wash only.

how many time I duty apply the hair mask?

What about combing the hair once they are dry?

Geetika, I didn’t understand your question.

Hi Anjana, Do you have any solution for my lice problem ? I’m terrified to comb by hair to clean it as it had been a long time since I’ve combed my hair. Do you know any alternative other than using a comb ?

Heyy, you could try the medicated shampoos for lice. They are really effective.

For lice and no brush I recommend going the dready way. Which I have actually done! Yay me kinda haha. So you would need 70% rubbing alcohol (I like the green kind) neem seed oil (foul smelling stuff) diatomaceous earth (food grade)
First put rubbing alcohol on scalp (you do not need to saturate it) throw a plastic bag over the hair let sit for 30min I did an hour because I had dreads. Rinse hair out in the tub. I plugged the tub so I could see if any critters were actually coming out of hair and if they were not moving (dead) add some neem seed oil to your shampoo (not your good shampoo tho) lather and rinse. Once hair is dry (go outdoors for this part) its time for the DE (diatomaceous earth) dust this powdery goodness into your locks and on scalp (try not to inhale dust) wrap ya hair up leave for 30 min rinse condition style. Repeat this process every 2-3 weeks for 1-3 months (since ya ain’t combing out the nits ya got to keep killing them). All these items are natural and the DE kills mechanically instead of chemically. Which is good because superlice is a thing also those box headlice kits cause cancer.

Thank you so much. But, I don’t have any idea about those shampoos, it would be really helpful if you prefer some products. I’ve combination skin and my hair produces sebum after every wash.

Mediker is a good one

Thank you πŸ˜ƒ

I came across your site last night & gave some of your suggestions try. I was skeptical but using just the conditioner produced great results. Amazing! My curls are back & beautiful.

So great to hear that Laura!

I just love your blog!! Added it to my favourites. Gr from The Netherlands.

Thank you πŸ™‚

Hi! For deep conditioning hair mask, should I be using extra virgin olive oil or normal? Also, Im yet to buy ACV. Can you pls suggest a brand which is affordable! I checked a few on Amazon and the one with Bragg’s costs around 1k!

Extra virgin is the best; normal is also ok..Here are some ACV brands – American Garden Apple Cider Vinegar, Nourish Vitals Apple Cider Vinegar, St.Botanica Natural Apple Cider Vinegar

Ok great! Thank you!! I might go for St. Botanica. Also, do I need to buy any essential oil for the mask?

You’re welcome Shruti ! … Not really essential (haha I didn’t mean it as a pun)

Hi. Is henna beneficial for curly hair ?

Henna loosens the curl pattern and weighs down hair a little

Can I replace yoghurt with curd?

Yes you can

what can i replace the avocados with? if possible

Umm nothing that I can think of..maybe buy avocado oil online if you don’t get fresh avocados?

can you tell some DIY masks that shape or produce tighter curls?

Natural curl pattern can be enhanced by following the CG routine. Do you have a routine yet?

Hey Anjana, first of all I want to thank you for this website. I have curl type 2C/3A and searched for a very long time to find any tips. I am from Germany and although a lot of people have curls over here (but most people dont care for the curls and it looks frizzy or they straight it), there are nearly no available products and even hairdressers have not idea how to deal with curls (one time a hairdresser brushed my hair with product in it while blow drying…) I began a while ago with sulfate, silicone free routine. But some days they “hang out” after some while.
Could an oil treatment with coconut oil make the hair to heavy? could the gelantine mask “destroy” the curls( I want to try it, but I am a bit scared that the curls are gone or the hair is too stubborn) ? and what can i do against brittle hair-ends?
Thank you for your work and your knowledge is appreciated! ( I showed the website to a friend of mine with curls and she was really excited, I think you are going to have a fan base over here)

So great to hear that Chia πŸ™‚ What is your exact concern with your curls other than the brittle ends? Dryness? Lack of hold? What products do you use currently and what’s your routine like?

i am going to write per mail, so i can send a picture of the hair

Hlo mam,i had defined wavy curls but due to lack of carelessness i’ve lost abundance of hair and now my hair has weighed down..which are neither curly nor straight.I love my curls alot. Can you suggest me any remedy which can define my curls again and also which can soften and eradicate grey hair issue too?

Sarbjeet, curl pattern can change due to hormonal changes, ageing, etc and that change cannot be reverted

Hi, Anjana, first of all thanks for your blog just loved it, very helpful. Basically m frm Pune, since last 4-5 yrs residential in Perth Australia. Due to changes in weather and climate, the type of my hair has also been changed (fine 2a to coarse 3a/3b) along with I have hypothyroidism :(. My point is, my everyday is a bad hair day :(. I had quite a long hair but due to excessive dryness, frizzy, brittle hair, I cut off my long hair. Now I ve shoulder length hairstyles, but dryness, frizzy hair and very voluminous hair, I never leave them open n I hate them πŸ™
I donot have any regime but after reading your blog I think I can try out your routine as it is quite appealing to me.
My main concern is my dry, frizzy ,brittle hair. Suggest me r guide me to tame them, with good hair products too.

Thanks for the wonderful postπŸ˜€How does hair masks help our hair? How are they different from deep conditioners?

They are almost the same πŸ™‚

can u suggest me any hair oil before hair wash

Hi! Do you recommend to apply this mask on freshly washed hair or otherwise? Thanks.

Yes, that would be ideal

Hi Anjana,
I tried the moisture mask 2 days ago. I left it on freshly washed hair for 30 min. While washing it off, my hair felt so dry and rough πŸ™ The texture is comparable with my hair when I wasn’t using a conditioner some years ago, but felt twice rough. This is when I was rinsing the mask out. So I ended up doing a deep conditioning and then it felt okay. Any guess on what could have gone wrong?
Thanks.

Not everything suits everybody Kakisha πŸ™‚ That’s completely fine

Hey , my hair is curly now , I had got in smoothened 2 years ago , can you help me with what and how do I apply the shit mask?

Hello!
how many time I duty apply the hair mask?

Hi Cecilia, you can apply it once a week

Thanks, very muchs! 🀩

I am not sure where you get your ACV or oils but I find that the food market is the least expensive place. The products are food grade which is generally of a higher quality standard than the cosmetics grade products and also tend to be lots cheaper and unscented.

If you want to scent your oils, you can add a few drops of essential oils to them.

As for eggs, if you do use egg in your hair, RINSE WITH COOL WATER. Otherwise you will be picking scrambled eggs out of your hair. Coconut cream is a good sub for regular diary but be careful with it since some brands leave bits of coconut n the cream. Unless you have a pet fruit bat to clean it all out of your hair, its a PITA to clean up.
