I first started using aloe vera gel in my curly hair routine when I realized that aloe vera gel was an ingredient in a lot of really popular curly hair gels like Bounce Curl light crΓ¨me gel, Kinky Curly curling custard etc. I figured using pure aloe vera gel would do my curls good too. And it did π
Benefits of aloe vera gel for curly hair
1) Aloe vera gel is an emollient. It smoothes the cuticle by forming a film on the surface of the hair and also because of its pH of around 4.5. The film can also provide very mild hold.
2) It provides, attracts and seals moisture due to presence of water and sugars.
3) It has small quantities of amino acids and proteins that can strengthen hair. (And so may not be suited for protein sensitive hair)
Ways to use aloe vera gel for curly hair
1) You can mix aloe vera gel into your prepoo oil, shampoo, conditioner or styling products. Aloe really is an all-rounder ingredient suitable for all stages of a curly hair routine. Mixing aloe gel with homemade flaxseed gel is a very popular cocktail in the curl community.
2) You can use it as a styling gel. Aloe gel will not give you strong hold like conventional gels. But it is good option if you want free flowing curls.
3) You can also directly smooth and scrunch it on to your freshly washed hair before proceeding to apply your styling products. This is my favorite way of applying aloe vera gel onto my curls.
4) Aloe gel is perfect for refreshing day 2 or 3 curls when you want a lightweight product to apply on your hair.
Even though the gel got straight out of a freshly cut aloe plant is THE best way to use it, itβs not always practical. Store bought Aloe vera gels (even the purest kinds) are usually a combination of aloe gel, preservatives and polymers so as to be suited for bottling in a container.
Here are some aloe vera gels available in India: –
1) Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel
2) Aroma Treasures Aloe Vera Gel
3) Green Leaf Pure Aloe Vera Skin Gel
4) Nature’s Essence Aloe Vera Gel
5) Patanjali Aloe Vera Gel
Here are some aloe vera gels available in the USA: –
1) Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera Gel (Extremely popular in the curly community!)
2) Fruit Of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel
3) Natural Republic Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera makes my curls really soft but as you mentioned the hold is pretty weak and my curls get frizzy pretty soon. I have tried blending with store bought gels and that does help me.

Great read Anjana. I definitely didn’t know about the benefits of aloe Vera. I actually found a bottle of it in my room as I was cleaning. Guess I bought it for a bad sunburn I had lol. I do like hold in my curls though so idk if I would use it as a gel.

Hi Anjana. I already have an Organic Aloe Vera Gel by Aloe Pura, but it is for skin care. I wanted to know whether I can use the same product for my hair.

Aloe Vera gel is the last thing I apply to my hair every wash day. I directly scrunch it into soaking wet hair right in the shower. I use the one by Patanjali. It imparts a refreshing fragrance to my hair and as you say a very mild hold making my curls soft and glossy and yet helps them stay in place. I’m interested in trying the one by Fruit of the Earth sometime in near future.

Iβm interested in #4. Iβve only ever heard of using a gel after your other stylers, not before. What are the benefits of using it on clean hair before your other stylers?

Hi Cassie, I assume you meant #3. Aloe gel is more of a moisturiser, than a hold providing gel (as mentioned in point 2). So it helps as the “water” which can then be sealed using other stylers. Hope that makes sense π

Great article, itβs crazy how versatile Aloe products can be. I never thought about using it for me hair. There is another subspecies of Aloe called Aloe arborescens that also is packed with a ton of benefits for a person’s immune system and what not. I was reading this article and that’s how I started learning about all the things that Aloe supplements can do.

Is aloe vera gel a humectant? I have high porosity, coarse hair and live in high humidity. You said it attracts moisture but it’s also a sealant. Wondering if this would be good for me or when it would be best to use (pre poo, as a leave in conditioner, or mixed in with gel…?)

It is a humectant. Give it a try mixed in with some gel and see how it works in your humid area

I’ve been searching for a hair product to use in the beach. Something to protect my hair from the sun and also to avoid frizz. After reading this post I decided to give aloe vera a try… and it worked!!! π

Hi Anjana Di , I just wanted to ask if I can use the patanjali aloe Vera gel in place of a curl cream since I am a college student and can’t afford the expensive curl creams, so I’ve been using normal shampoo and conditioner with homemade flaxseed gel but my hair are still frizzy. So I decided to add a curl cream but I don’t want to buy an expensive one. π

Curl creams are not compulsory Swapnil. Use your regular conditioner as a leave in and use a good hard hold gel. Check the beginner kit. Aloe doesn’t provide enough hold.
