My first ever post on this blog was on why we shouldn’t brush or comb curly hair when it is dry because I used to see so many curly heads around me who had such beautiful curly hair only if they hadn’t brushed it into a hair ball destroying all curl definition. Not anybody’s fault, because everyone, including myself grew up seeing that. We apply oil and then brush and remove the tangles and hope that one fine day our hair will be straight :P. So naturally when we had to put a stop to dry brushing, the next question was how on earth do we detangle curly hair then? How do we remove all the knots and tangles in curly hair? Here are 2 ways to detangle curly hair.
1. Detangling curly hair using an oil before washing– dry detangling
Oils provide a lot of slip and thus make detangling very easy. Do this before washing your hair.
- Section your dry hair into 2 or 4.
- Working with one section at a time, apply an oil of your choice. Oils and curly hair – Benefits, types and ways to apply. If your hair is super rough and dry, you could also spritz it with some water along with the oil for added lubrication.
- Detangle gently using your fingers. Start from the bottom, remove the tangles there and slowly work your way up to the top of your hair for each section. You can’t detangle from the top if the hair below it is tangled. You could also use a wide toothed comb, but I find finger detangling easier because your fingers can move and bend with your hair and pull apart the knots gently.
You can use clips to secure detangled sections as you proceed to other sections. Remember that dry detangling should be done just before washing your hair only, and not in between washes.
2. Detangling curly hair while conditioning – wet detangling
This is my most favourite way to detangle my curly hair. Repeat steps a. to c. as above, replacing oil with conditioner. The conditioner and water provide very good lubrication and make the hair soaking wet and lubricated to make detangling super easy. Check out these articles – How to wash & condition curly hair & How much conditioner should you use?
I have noticed that if I detangle my hair properly every time I condition it (twice or thrice per week), my hair is tangle free until the next wash day – 7 ways to keep curly hair tangle free in between washes. But if any day I find that my hair is more tangled than usual (due to the wind or rough products or chlorinated water), I first do a dry detangling and then follow it up with a wet detangling.

Question: I’ve got both curly hair and psoriasis, so it’s completely out of the question for me to NOT brush my hair at some point. Do you think it’s worth using one of these detangling methods, but using a brush to dislodge flakes on my scalp, so that I can deal with both problems at once?

Hi there. I’ve tried detangling my hair without brushing, first using oil and dry detangling and then following it up by using generous amount of conditioner (Schwarzkopf) and using a wide-tooth comb, but I end up losing so much hair in the process. My usual method is dry detangling with oil and brushing it with a wide-tooth comb and I lose only half the amount of hair from the earlier process.
It would seem my hair is even more fragile detangling when wet and brushing it while dry results in far less hair loss. Is brushing curly hair that big of an issue?

Why are you detangling twice? Also using a comb to detangle wet hair can cause more breakage. Use your fingers and detangle gently

What do we do on the days between washes then? Do we apply conditioner or something to hydrate hair or is following the curly hair routine enough to maintain he curls till he next wash day without doing anything? I wash my hair twice a week so there are generally 3 days between each wash day
By the way I love your squish and condish method and I’ve never seen my curls more defined. Thank you for your awesome posts 🙂

Hi Anjana,.
First time in CG.
1. I used matrix shampoo followed by enliven conditioner and detangled hair with fingers.
2. On wet hair, did gelatin protien treatment and washed in 5 mins. Applied only to hair not on scalp.
3. Applied enliven coconut and vanilla conditioner again only to hair not into scalp.
4. Used homemade flax seed gel + fresh aloe vera leaf gel+ few drops of Argan oil as a last step and air dried total night. Applied only to hair not on scalp.
5. Morning I am surprised to see the curls 😊 formed very nicely. But one problem is my hair type is very very very dry..It looks so frizzy and not at all moisturised
Please provide your feedback on the process I followed and suggest me what to do on next day after wash for extreme dry…I cannot go to office without combing this dry hair… Suggest me pls

Hi! I new here like a few weeks old. I never thought it was possible to maintain curls like! I actually bought an expensive hair curler just so that I can get curls that look like my natural curls. So finding your blog is literally a life saver for my curls. I have a ton of questions (i hope you don’t mind!) but I’ll start here. Can I ask, if yo don’t de-tangle your hair, how do you style it, after wash, when getting ready for work or an evening out? if you need to braid your hair or any other hair style, I guess we just comb/brush it and loose the curls? I followed oiur curly hair routine but find that my curls are still a little dry (even after applying gel and then serum) Perhaps I’m not adding enough product? thanks!!!

I usually do dry detangling…which takes almost an hour! But I find that my hair is never completely detangled. Because I use a wooden wide tooth comb and brush it once a month, after dry detangling with my fingers, and I find there are still knots and tangles. Is there any solution to that?

Do you use an oil to dry detangle?

I apply coconut oil after detangling because when I do it during the detangling, the oiled hair invariably lands on my face and I tend to break out easily. Is there any non-comedogenic oil I can use to detangle that is a moisturising oil?

You don’t need a moisturising oil just for detangling. It’s moisturising properties is because it is able to penetrate, it will be comedogenic. But you can give olive oil a try too as it is less moisturising than coconut oil

Hi there!
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does that mean in between washes we don’t comb or brush our hair at all period? We just make sure to dry detangle or wet detangle and leave our hair as is (without combing or brushing) until the next wash day, correct?
I’m just so confused because I’ve lost a lot of hair recently and my mom said it’s because I don’t comb/brush my hair. But i don’t think that’s it…

Hi! Thank you for making this website! I was wondering if you could share a photo of how your hair looks like after you dry detangle?

Hi Vineeta, I prefer detangling with my fingers as it is much gentler. I also like these types of brushes occasionally.
