  • 17 Japanese KitKat Flavours + Where to Buy KitKat in Tokyo

There have been more than 300 flavors of Kit Kats in Japan since 2000. “KitKat” started being associated with the phrase “Kitto Kattsu”, translated as “You will surely win,” and were sent as a good luck charm for students approaching exams.

I wanted to try as many flavours as possible and I was on the lookout for them like a mad person. My husband said and I quote “You look like you are on a treasure hunt!”. In total I got 17 flavours :

Sakura Matcha
Matcha with a slight flowery hint –

Hokkaido melon with mascarpone cheese
My favourite! Beautiful muskmelony smell and taste –

Rum Raisin
Tasted strongly of rum –

Japanese Sake
Whoa! Tastes and smell exactly like sake – quite alcohol-y –

Wasabi
I HATE wasabi. But this came as a surprise. It just had a slight mustard-y after taste.

Shinshu Apple
One of the few with milk chocolate instead of whiet chococlate as the base – tasted of apples –

Momiji Manju (Maple cakes filled with sweet bean paste)
Tastes of steamed red beans –

Wa Ichigo strawberry
Tastes of strawberry – didn’t find it much different from Strawberry Cheese Cake and the Amaou Strawberry –

Strawberry Cheese Cake
Tastes of strawberry only (not sour at all 🙁 ) – didn’t find it much different from Wa Ichigo strawberry and the Amaou Strawberry –

Amaou Strawberry
Tastes of strawberry – didn’t find it much different from Strawberry Cheese Cake and the Wa Ichigo strawberry –

Beni imo (Purple Sweet Potato) –
I honestly don’t know how to explain the taste. It was just average.

Iwaizumi Yoghurt
Doesn’t taste too much like yoghurt. Not sour enough –

Raspberry
Very tart and great raspberry flavour –

Premium Mint
Milk chocolate and good quality mint –

Sakura & Roasted Soy Bean
Nutty with a hint of flower-y taste –

Matcha with Uji Gyokuro
A very mild matcha flavour –

Uji Koi Dark Matcha
Strong matcha flavour – slightly bitter –

These are the 4 places I purchased these Kitkast flovours from in Tokyo :

Shokoku Gotochi Plaza (inside Tokyo Station)
Don Quijote, Shinjuku
Seven Eleven stores
Narita Airport (Airport-only exclusive flavours)
