If you have looked for curly hair products online, you would see so many options like gel, leave in, custard, cream, spray, mousse *dizzzyyy*. How do you know what would work for your curly hair? What do each of these products exactly do? Letβs look at some of the different curly hair products available in the market(beyond the usual shampoo and conditioner).
- Co wash cleanser/ cleansing conditioner
In my article about co washing, I had mentioned how a conditioner can be used instead of a shampoo to clean your hair. A cleansing conditioner is a conditioner which has the ability to cleanse the scalp and hair. Though most conditioners can double up as a co wash cleanser, there are products in the market specifically marketed as co wash cleansers.
- Moisturiser
A moisturiser helps to retain moisture and provide additional moisture. They have ingredients that attract and hold moisture to the hair and also ingredients that seal the added moisture.
- Leave in conditioner, Milk, Lotion
Leave in conditioners are watered down conditioners that are very light and help in adding moisture and detangling in between wash days or after your wash. Since they are lighter than conditioners, they can be used daily without effects like build up or weighing hair down. These are particularly helpful for refreshing curly hair.
- Butter, Pudding, Custard
*drool*. Apart from being things that you can eat, they are usually very rich and thick moisturizers. They come in tubs and jars being thick. Pudding and custards may usually also provide hold depending on their ingredients.
- Serum
Hair serums are mostly silicone-based products with small amount of oils that coat your hair strands to prevent frizz and fly-a-ways and impart shine.
- Gel
Gel is a clear substance that helps with curl definition and hold, controls frizz and fly aways and usually gives a wet, sleek look to hair. Curly hair gels : Everything you need to know
- Mousse
Mousse is an opaque, foamy, airy product that helps provide light hold and added volume to wavy or fine curly hair. It is lighter than gel and hence doesnβt have as much hold.
- Curling cream
Curling cream is the baby of a gel and a leave in. They provide soft hold and definition to curls in addition to having nourishing and moisturizing properties. They donβt form a cast or cause crunchy curls like gels do.
- Pomade
Pomades are heavy styling products and usually have beeswax, petroleum based ingredients or hydrogenated fats. Itβs mainly used for highly sculpted & slick styles like updos that require extreme hold.
- Spray/spritz/mist
These products are very light and watery and are mainly used to impart shine and for refreshing curly hair.
There you have it π Companies may use different names for their products so it is always good to check the label and ingredients and make an informed choice.

Thanks for this post, Anjana. It was very informative π π Can you suggest a refreshing spray that can be used on the second or third day after hair wash? Am thinking of making one with glycerin, but I still need to get all the ingredients.

Vidya, I will do a post on refreshing curls. But I am not sure glycerin is a good idea in a tropical country like ours. I could be wrong.

When we have to use serum? Can serum be used instead of leave in after scrunching hair by using conditioner? And after serum can we use gel?

Hey Anjana! I recently came across your blog, a lil too late.π But better late than never right π! Must say you have an awesome blog where you pay attention to the details! ππ I love it and your curls!β₯οΈ
I am also a curly but hated being one all my life. But now I have realised it’s high time to embrace it.( Praise the lordπ)
Long story short, I would like to have your expert advice. I have type mostly 2c curls and a lil bit 3a I think that breaks easily.
And I normally just use a sulfate free shampoo and a leave in curly hair cream (scrunching ), tea plop and air dry and no comb.
But as you would have imagined it’s not doing the trick, hair gets frizzy and unmanageabe after it is dry especially the scalp part. And I am overwhelmed by the countless products available out there( did read your post). Could you pls tell me if just buying a gel or a leave in conditioner would help?( I am lil lazy to do more than that every day as I wash my hair daily after workout). And if yes pls suggest products( affordable) to buy in the Netherlands. Since you are/ have been here I believe you know what the weather and biking do to your hair π
Thanks in advance, Cheers Shruthi

Hi Shruti, I am so glad to hear it!
A leave in would work best in the Dutch weather. And I’d suggest Kinky curly knot today

This is SO helpful! Thank you!
What is the difference between gems and category #4, Butter, Pudding, Custard? When would want a gel vs one from #4?
Thanks in advance! π I showed my husband your photos and his jaw dropped at how gorgeous your curls are. Heβs fully on board with me spending the time and money to make the switch from straight hair. Thank you for being such an inspiration and sharing what youβve learned. Love from Michigan in the USA.
