Well defined curly hair is one of the most beautiful sights ever. No seriously. Every time I see someone with beautiful bouncy spirals, it makes me very happy (is that strange :D) and I fall in love with curly hair all over again. Here are some tips and tricks to help you get well defined curls.
1. Keep Hair Well-Moisturized
Moisture helps curls clump together and form the oh-so-loved ringlets. Curls that are dry will not have the same definition as well-conditioned curls.
2. Apply leave ins, serums, mousses and other styling products while your hair is really wet
Putting products on it while wet seals in the moisture. Curls clump together when wet.
3. Apply products in Sections
This ensures that all hair strands get the product evenly.
4. Twirl the coils with fingers
Part the hair into sections and create smaller sections from each part using your fingers. I.e., take small sections of your hair and curl or twirl each section one after the other around your finger to help the hair form clumps.
5. Scrunch your hair
Scrunching encourages curl formation. How to apply products and scrunch curly hair.
6. Use products with good hold
For a long time, I used to use only a serum. It did make my hair look moisturized but there was something missing. This is because leave ins and serums don’t contain ingredients that will hold and define curls. Gels and mousses help provide hold and definition i.e. they help curls clump. I am yet to find a product that I really love.
7. After applying products, don’t touch your hair
No touching, combing or brushing. Why you shouldn’t brush or comb curly hair.
8. Use good products
Certain brands perform really well for a reason. They have ingredients that are tried and tested and known to help curly hair. I usually love OGX and L’Oreal for my hair. I have reviewed the products that I use here.
9. Get a good haircut
A good haircut will help you avoid the lion’s mane look, create flowy bouncy curl layers and create a big difference in the way your hair looks. Haircuts for curly hair.

As for hold, have you tried flaxseed gel(FSG)? It makes my clumps neat and my hair looks shiny. It may not provide as much hold as products available in market, but it does a considerable job for hold.

Ya Swati I have tried it 1 or 2 times. It wasn’t that great. Probably I am yet to make it the right way.

What is your take on cowash?? For me, it leaves my hair limp, flat n movement less. FYI, post cowash I used a leave in cond, a small quantity of whipped Shea butter and a styling gel. I have recently got my straightened hair trimmed n have also started following d cg routine, but ur blogs seems to b in ‘not so good’ terms with that. I m also losing a lot of hair and my hair kinda behaves differently every time I wash them. Meanwhile ur hair looks gorgeous. TIA.

Hi Vaishnavi! As with most curlies, I have also tried the CG method during my early trying-to-love-my-curly-hair days. It didn’t do much for me and I have explained the reasons for the same at https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/got-back-sulphates-curly-hair/ and https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/silicones-and-curly-hair-why-i-love-them/ . I am in no way against the CG method. I will for sure give it a try again sometime! My policy is not CG or anti-CG. My policy is – You have got to experiment till you find what suits you the best. If you don’t follow CG but you are happy with the way your hair looks, don’t feel guilty. On the other hand if your hair likes the CG method, listen to it. At the end of the day, YOU should be happy about YOUR hair. CG is meant to make your hair look good. So if it’s not doing that, choose what does make your hair look good. CG is just an option, not a rule!
